Race Summary

PURGE settled in good position behind the early leader, swung out to the three path entering the backstretch, was rated just behind MEDALLIST to the far turn, charged past that one to take command midway on the turn, extended his advantage opening a comfortable lead in upper stretch then drew away under a vigorous hand ride. THE CLIFF'S EDGE stumbled slightly at the start, raced far back while trailing for six furlongs, launched a rally on the far turn, closed a lengthy gap to reach contention on the turn, swung to the outside of EDDINGTON at the top of the stretch, then closed steadily in the middle of the track but couldn't threaten the winner. EDDINGTON was outrun for a half mile, gradually worked his way forward from outside on the turn, circled four wide into the stretch, drifted in to soundly bump NIIGON in upper stretch then continued on willingly to gain a share. NIIGON was reserved for five furlongs while saving ground, angled three wide on the turn, lodged a mild bid in upper stretch, was bumped off stride at the three-sixteenths pole then weakened in the final eighth. MEDALLIST sprinted clear early, set a rapid pace along the rail for six furlongs, relinquished the lead on the turn then gave way. COURAGEOUS ACT chased the pacesetter along the rail for five furlongs and steadily tired thereafter. Following a stewards inquiry into the stretch run along with a claim of foul by the rider of NIIGON, EDDINGTON was disqualified from third and placed fourth for interference.
