February 7-8 2004 Race Day Recap:

There were 6 Prep races this weekend:
Whirlaway Stakes (Aqueduct)
San Vicente G2 (Santa Anita)
Davona Dale G2 (Gulfstream)
Turf Paradise Derby (Turf Paradise)
Louisiana Premiere Night (Delta Downs) had two 3yo races
Golden State Mile (Golden State)
Sham Stakes (Santa Anita)

First and foremost we have to look at the Sham Stakes, where Master David won as I predicted. Even though he didn't win last time out, everybody seemed to be on his bandwagon by now.  He rated in 2nd behind an almost slow pace this time, eliminating the need for a big closing move.  The Frankel student was an even money favorite this time, as the more heralded 2yo champ Action This Day brought up the rear for most of the race before running past tired horses for 4th.  Borrego challenged for the lead in the stretch and came up a length short. Baffert's Preachinatthebar made a late closing move to just miss 2nd by a head.  I expected Master David to sit farther behind the pace, but Frankel has his ways of making the colt rate earlier.  MAKE MASTER DAVID THE FIRST HORSE YOU BET ON WHEN THE FUTURES POOL OPENS NEXT WEEK, AND INCLUDE HIM IN YOUR ROAD TO THE ROSES STABLE (www.roadtotheroses.com)

It's worth mentioning the 8.5f Davona Dale Stakes, even though we try to forget the female horses sometimes. Miss Coronado set a slow pace that was uncontested until about 6f, where she was overtaken and then fought back to beat Eye Dazzler and favorite Society Selection in an exciting finish where only necks separated them.  Expect 1 of these three to run in the Derby and lose.

My best score of the day was in the ungraded Whirlaway, where I pegged 10-1 shot Little Maath Man for the win. It's not that he's a great horse, and in fact had some of the worst credentials, but he was the only late runner a field of rank horses. The quality closer Rb's Glitter that I had set out to bet on, was scratched, leaving it to this joker to win, so he paid out a nice WPS.  Quick Action, though he tired early for 3rd, and Risky Trick who closed for 2nd, are probably the only 2 in this field worth keeping an eye on. Quick Action is a Carson City (Mr. Prospector) colt who needs to be on the lead, so that alone will take him out of some races, but in races that lack other early speed he will be dominant.

The San Vicente was won by Imperalism, who made a strong late move to pass tiring rivals after a burning pace to win the 7f in 1:22:34.  I know it's only a sprint, but to make a late move like that coming from the rear in that short distance makes it more impressive.  This Langfuhr (Danzig) colt has had some success at route races on the turf, but doesn't currently appear to possess the speed necessary for a roses run.

Mambo Train won the Turf Paradise Derby in a crappy field headed by favorite Perfect Moon who finished 2nd.  Wimplestiltskin finished 4th which is probably the highest he'll ever finish in a stakes race.

OK Mikie won the Golden Gate Mile in a come from behind fashion. Not sure any of these horses are worth watching yet either.
