February 7-8 2004 Older Horses Recap:

There were a few good races for older horses:
Donn Handicap (Gulfstream)
Strub Stakes (Santa Anita)
Louisiana Premiere NIght (Delta Downs) had all stakes races

In the Donn Hcp, Medaglia D'oro did not let down his backers as the 3-5 favorite. He was impressive in overtaking the rabbit Predawn Raid around the last turn and drew off from a determined Seattle Fitz, who has been running in top form this year. Funny Cide's stakes debut was not too disappointing as he battled Fitz in the stretch and settled for 3rd.  MDO has been unbeatable at 9f for a while, taking all 5 at that distance starting with the Jim Dandy in Aug02. Last year he also won the Travers at 10f, but settled for 2nd in all other races over 9f, including the BC Classic, twice. Anything over 9f and this horse is vulnerable because of his early running form, particularly if there is some other quality early speed, as there always is in the BC classic.  I would be him to win in any 9f race and to place in any 10f race where there's early speed. I don't think you can lose with this strategy.  Yes, he's better than Congaree: I thought that dispute was settled in the Classic.  I would have liked to see him square off with Mineshaft at 9f, and Empire Maker in that conflict of interest, but alas those two retired. MDO could end up being one of the best horses of our time because of his inability to lose at 9f. It's somewhat surprising that the El Prado (Sadler's Wells) colt has not been retired yet.

Moving on to the Strub Stakes, Domestic Dispute closed on a torrid 9f pace (22.35, 45.83, 1:10.35, 1:35.87, 1:49.08) to edge out During by a neck. During apparently learned to rate for this one, as he is normally on the lead, but settled back in 4th as the others tired out.  Midas Eyes also attempted to rate and close but came up short for 4th place.  Toccet just didn't have his closing move today as he finished way out of the money. See the link above for the box score.

Louisiana Premiere Night at Delta Downs featured a lot of nobodies, but I included the race results just in case something comes out of it.
