There were a few good races for older horses this week: The most disappointing race of the day was the Campbell cup at Laurel. I narrowed it down to 2 scenarios, each for if the pace exploded or if it stayed slow as the charts seemed to dictate (which it did). I took out an exacta, and about 2-3 tri's and supers for each. I nailed the race exactly as they finished. However, let me explain what this DQ of the 2nd horse Rogue Agent was about. Evening Attire was desperately trying to recover from the snail pace when he entered the stretch. Having been trapped against the rail throughout the turn, Bridgmohan tried to drive the gelding through about 2 feet of space between Rogue Agent and the rail. Nobody I was sitting with believed he was doing that. Then, of course, he bumped the horses ass, and Rogue angled in because of the bump. That's what horses do, when their ass gets pushed one way, their nose goes the other way. The $2 million horse stumbled then got going again and passed a tiring rival for 3rd. The next thing that happened was inexplicable: the stewards rewound and watched the tapes for about 10 minutes before promoting Evening Attire to 2nd place, rewarding the jockey's boneheaded, careless maneuver. None of the people I was sitting with agreed with the move, as there was no room to try to push the horse through. When they entered the stretch, room opened up on the outside to angle the horse out and make a move there, but the stubborn Bridgmohan decided to try to squeeze him into a space narrower than a horse's ass. This was an extremely dangerous, careless maneuver that should prevent Bridgmohan from getting good mounts. If I owned a multiple graded stakes champion that had $2M in career earnings, and a jock did that to him, he would never get a mount on one of my horses again. He risked his own life and that of a valuable horse to make a move that was impossible. Anyway, so I hit the meaningless tri, but not the exacta or super, both of which I would have had, if the order were left alone as it should have been. They find a new way to rip me off every week. Ole Faunty was the late blooming Quiet American colt that won the race, taking over the slow lead from Rogue Agent in the stretch of the 9f contest. The Barbara Fritchie G2, also at Laurel, was a 7f sprint for filies 3 and up, won by even money favorite Bear Fan. I called this one exactly, like everyone else, as the 2nd and 3rd choices came in, you guessed it, 2nd and 3rd. It's one of those races where you bet the tri on the 3 horses and hope for no upsets. That's what I did. My $1 box paid 19. yeehaw. In the Tampa Bay Breeders cup, Burning Roma took over on the stretch on a fast pace set up by Milky Way Guy. The 3rd choice was followed by favorite Remind and Native Hawk in the 8.5f turf race. That about covers it for this weekend of racing. see you next week.
