Race Summary

BIRDSTONE was unhurried in the early stages, angled to the rail approaching the first turn, saved ground entering the backstretch, gradually closed the gap midway down the backstretch, angled out nearing the far turn, moved up three wide to challenge at the quarter pole, took charge in upper stretch, shook off LION HEART to get clear in midstretch then turned back THE CLIFF'S EDGE under steady left hand encouragement. THE CLIFF'S EDGE was outrun in the early stages, trailed for nearly a half, rapidly gained while four wide nearing the far turn, closed the gap from outside leaving the quarter pole, made a run to threaten in midstretch but was no match for the winner. EDDINGTON was taken in hand in the early stages, was rated just behind the leaders along the backstretch, moved out briefly on the turn, angled back to the rail in upper stretch then lacked a strong closing response. PURGE moved up from outside in the early stages, stalked the pace from outside along the backstretch, took up chase after LION HEART midway on the turn, surged to the front nearing the quarter pole, battled into upper stretch and weakened in the final eighth. SIR SHACKLETON was rated along the inside in the early stages, moved between horses along the backstretch, dropped back on the far turn and steadily tired thereafter. SUAVE raced in the middle of the pack while four wide along the backstretch, trailed on the far turn and was never close thereafter. LION HEART rushed up to gain the early advantage, set a moderate pace along the inside to the turn, relinquished the lead nearing the top of the stretch then gave way.
