Three Year Old Picture Coming Into FocusApril 3, 2006 It has become increasingly obvious that this year's three-year-old (3yo) crop is not measuring up to prior classes. People say this every year, I know, but are there really any standouts? There were, but some of the most promising horses of potential have been taken out of the picture. Henny Hughes, 1 of the first slam-dunks for my RTTR stable, was taken out of Kirian Mclaughlin's custody and shipped to Godolphin in Dubai, if for no other reason than to keep him from winning any preps in the US. He was returned to the trainer after the Dubai World Cup, having not run a single race this year, after finishing 2nd in the BC Juvenile last year. Henny easily has the earnings to make the Derby but has no prep races this year. As such he may turn up in the Preakness or later. Stevie Wonderboy, who we would not expect anything from this year since he won the BC Juvy, is off the trail with injury. The Point Given batch is having some injury problems as well. Great Point is recovering from a minor ankle injury, and the status of Point Determined is highly undetermined. Corinthian looked great bumbling down the stretch in the Fountain of Youth, knocking out other horses that were in his way, while DQ'ing to third. We won't see him again for a while. What we have now are a bunch of leftovers, and clearly not the best in class. However, we must realize that as the days of juicing in graded stakes races are virtually gone at most tracks, so too are the enormous performances that we've seen in past preps. We should be thankful for the new supertest rules though, since horses will run truer to form. Here's the top of the class now:
Forget all about anyone who ran in the Lane's End for now. That polytrack surface was a joke and every race run that day was a joke. I am embarrassed that I actually won a bet that day because I shouldn't have. It was a highly unpredictable surface and none of those results count. I'm never betting on that track again. What a waste. For 2 years in a row, the best 3yo has come from the Arkansas circuit, and I see no reason to deviate from that now. Once again we have a horse dominating in ARK, and it's Lawyer Ron. I don't necessarily like lawyers but this one is the best so far. He showed a lot of versatility in the Rebel coming from off the pace and can no longer be called one-dimensional. So there we have it. Great Point has no point and his half brother should be renamed Point Undetermined. There's one thing I can guarantee: this list will change after the major preps are run this weekend. Doug Cooke FSR |
